Heat packs have a variety of essential uses like soothing muscle pain, during labour, as hand warmer etc. there are varieties of electric heat packs in the market but ever thought of making your own? The plus point- you save money and electricity!
HERE IS HOW TO MAKE REUSABLE RICE HEAT PACKS:
Things you need:
- Cotton fabric (plain or printed whatever you prefer)
- Uncooked rice
- Essential oil of your choice
Note: The size of the cloth and rice amount depends upon the size of heater you want. Adjust the rice amount according to the cloth.
STEP 1: Cut and sew the fabric in the size and shape you want (usually a large washcloth size works well).
STEP 2: Leave an inch or two open on one side so that you can fill pouch with rice (about 1/2 to 3/4 full, more or less as you prefer). You don’t want it too full though, the sack should be able to mould itself around your body when you apply it.
STEP 3: Put few drops essential oil in the rice before you fill. When you heat the pad, the essential oil fragrance will soothe your senses.
STEP 4: Once it’s full, sew opening closed either by hand or machine (keeping filler pushed to the opposite side of bag while sewing).
STEP 5: Once you’re ready to use it, put the bag in the microwave for up to 2 minutes and enjoy! OR you can keep it in the freezer for a cold pack 🙂
Use an old knee-high sock: just fill with rice and sew or tie the end.
Use an old pillow case: Just cut in half. Use the side with the bottom seam and fill with a couple of cups of rice. Sew a line all the way across to create a sealed tube, then repeat with another couple of cups of rice. Repeat until the entire thing is full and seam the end to create a finished rice pack with several tubes full of rice.
