If you are a life hacker, you are probably one of those who likes making homemade stuff from makeup, skincare and hair care to home cleaning and laundry products. Coming to laundry, how many of you regularly use washing soda? Probably all of us do. Washing soda contains toxic chemicals which certainly can be avoided by making your very own washing soda (also called as soda ash).
Here are the steps to make washing soda:
Things you need: To make the washing soda, you need 500 gms of baking soda, a metal dish and a wooden spoon.
STEP 1: Take the baking dish and cover the bottom with a thin layer of baking soda and make sure it is even all over. Pre-heat the oven 400o F and slide the dish in.
STEP 2: let the baking soda bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour or even more if the quantity is more. Make sure you stir it in between for even heat distribution.
STEP 3: Once the baking soda is done with baking part, the washing soda is ready. Put it in an open plate and keep it that way until it cools down. Once it is cooled, store it in an air tight container.
STEP 4: To use, add 1 cup of this washing soda to your laundry along with your regular detergent. The grease fighting nature of washing soda will boost your regular detergent’s ability to clean and remove dirt.
- Washing soda is the chemical compound with the formula Na2CO3. Washing soda has a much higher pH level than baking soda, and is not safe to consume.
- The baking soda and washing soda only have a difference of one hydrogen molecule. When the baking soda is heated above a certain point, it loses its hydrogen molecule.
- Washing soda will not clump up like baking soda does. Washing soda grains will be more like sand and grainy that just flows easily.
