Every house needs a room freshener- to sometimes get rid of odours or to simply make your home smell fresh. Commercial air-fresheners are filled with toxic chemicals that are so overpowering and let’s face it; they don’t really get rid of odours. Instead, they just mask the odor with a super-fruity, synthetic scent. Here are some DIY natural room fresheners that possess no toxicity and are completely safe:

Light your votive candle and let the wax melt as much as possible.   After the wax has mostly melted blow out the candle (make sure you blow the candle before adding essential oils as most of the oils are flammable) add between 5-8 drops of essential oil to the votive candle.  Let it sit for 5 minutes and re-light the candle. You are done! When you lit this candle, it will make your home smell like that of the essential oil.

You need rice, a small bowl or container and an essential oil (or blends). Put rice in a bowl and add in 1 teaspoon of essential oil evenly over it. Shake it a bit and place the bowl in any of the rooms. The rice is important in this homemade air freshener recipe because it’s what holds in the essential oils and slowly disperses them into the air. More details on essential oil diffusers >>

Potpourri is a great way to keep your house smelling great with continuous supply of soothing fragrance. You can certainly make your own potpourri without the toxicity or added chemical fragrances in it which is the case with commercially bought potpourris. To make your own potpourri, simply collect pine cones, flowers, buds and pieces of bark, clean them off and allow to fully dry. Drop essential oils onto them and place in a bowl. Make several such bowls and keep them around the house.
