Peppermint plant is known as a natural insect repellent plant and its oil can be used for making a natural insect repellent spray without the side effects that usually accompany commercial insect repellent sprays. If you prefer a fresh and minty clean aroma in your bug spray than that icky chemical smell, peppermint is the perfect choice. Peppermint is a natural insecticide that kills as well as repels mosquitoes. Here are few ways you can use peppermint oil as insect repellent:
INSECT REPELLENT SPRAY
Take a sanitized spray bottle and fill it with one cup of distilled water. Now add a half cup of witch hazel, 40 drops of peppermint essential oil and half tbsp. of vegetable glycerine into the bottle. Shake everything well and then spray it wherever you want, maybe in the corners of the house and near windows.
PEPPERMINT LEMON WEDGES
This is an ayurvedic way to keep insects from coming inside your house. Take a lemon and cut it in half. Add few drops of peppermint oil on it and pluck in cloves. Keep it near the window and you are done.
COTTON BALL TRICK
This is the simplest of all tricks! If you are frustrated with ants and other insects residing in your house and showing up at night, here is a trick for you. Take few cotton balls and saturate each with concentrated peppermint essential oil. Place each ball on areas you feel insects reside, maybe near tiny holes, corners etc. before you go to bed.
Talcum powder mixed with a bit of peppermint oil can be used to instantly get rid of insects especially red ants and other tiny insects. Take some talcum powder in a bowl and add few drops of peppermint oil to it. Mix it well and let it dry naturally. Keep this powder in an ait tight jar and use it as and when you feel a need to. /t use, simply sprinkle it on the insects and they should literally run away.
